Bernard Francis Driscoll Obituary

Bernard Francis Driscoll, 87, beloved husband and best friend of Lori (Mancuso) Driscoll, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at his home in West Hartford. Bernie was born August 27, 1926 in Holyoke, MA to the late Frank and Ida (Melanson) Driscoll. He entered the U.S. Army when he was seventeen and served his country honorably in the Philippines, specifically in Gen. Douglas MacArthur's Headquarters. After returning from his service he went to work for the Burroughs Corp. as a business machines analyst. In 1955 he entered the automobile business as a salesman. He later went to work with Williams Ford in West Hartford and then with Gengras Motor Cars in Hartford. In his years at Gengras, Bernie worked his way through sales, general management and ultimately owner before his retirement in 1995. Bernie was a member of the Avon VFW Post 3272, The St. Francis Hospital Auxiliary, Connecticut Automotive Trades Association (1990 Dealer of the Year), and the National Automobile Dealers Association. He also served on the board of the Greater Hartford YMCA. He was an avid golfer and a 44 year member of the Wethersfield Country Club where he scored a hole-in-one on the 5th hole. He was also a lifelong Red Sox fan. Bernie will be remembered for his gifted storytelling, his wry sense of humor and most especially his love for his family and his many friends. In addition to his wife Lori, he is survived by his daughter, Lisa Madison and her husband Dana of Lake Oswego, OR; his sister, Jean Groothuis of Avon; and his grandson, Liam, to whom he was affectionately known as "Papa". He also leaves his nieces, Kathryn Graber, Carin Bouharoun, Sarah Vilms, Meaghan Rubey and their families, his cousin, Susan Mantoni and her family, as well as many other relatives and friends. Bernie's family will receive friends on Monday, July 14, from 8:30-9:45 a.m. at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor. We will then go in procession to St. Peter Claver Church, 47 Pleasant St., West Hartford, for a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 10:30 a.m. Burial with military honors will be in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford.
