William Patrick Conley Obituary

William Patrick Conley of Simsbury, beloved husband of Odette, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday evening (July 13, 2014) surrounded by family members. He was born on August 10, 1921, in Providence, RI, the son of William Patrick Conley and Mary Theresa (Murphy) Conley. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to New Haven where he attended public schools. Bill later graduated from the University of Connecticut where he competed in track and field and set the UConn high jump record in 1942. Bill served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. He was assigned to the light Cruiser Astoria with Carrier Task Forces 38 and 58 during World War II, and participated in the Philippines, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa campaigns as well as the pre-surrender bombardment of Japan. He was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant in The Naval Reserve. Bill was then employed by the General Electric Company in the Business Training Program in Bridgeport. In November 1947, he was appointed as a Special Agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He served in Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago, Houston, and New York. Bill resigned from the FBI in 1956 and joined Curtiss Wright Aircraft Corporation where he became Assistant to the Controller. In 1958, he joined the ITT Corporation as Comptroller for their European subsidiary in Paris which was responsible for the design and installation of the NATO early warning communication system. In 1966, Bill was assigned to Brussels, Belgium where he served as Assistant Comptroller for ITT Europe and Comptroller for ITT Industries - Europe. In 1969 he was assigned to ITT World Headquarters in New York where he was Director of Financial Controls for the Consumer Services Group. In 1971 Bill joined PepsiCo, Inc. at Purchase, New York, as Vice President of Finance for the International Division. He retired from PepsiCo in 1981. Bill met the love of his life, Odette Marie de Mare, in Paris in the spring of 1962 and they were married at L'Etang-la-Ville, France, on October 9, 1962. They have five children and ten grandchildren: daughter Nancy Cowser, her husband Nate, and their son Donovan of Uncasville; son William and his wife Tracy of Long Beach, CA; son Frank, his wife Jen, and their four children - Lindsay, Matthew, Sophie, and Emma of Ridgefield; son Jerry, his wife Mary Beth, and their three sons - Devin, Christian, and Patrick of West Simsbury; and son Christopher, his wife Amanda, and their two daughters - Abigail and Penelope of Marion, MA. Bill is survived by his brother and close friend Joseph Conley of Cicero, NY and his dear sister Joan Zisek of West Haven. He was predeceased by his beloved sister Patricia Conley of New Haven. Bill was a member of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI, the Financial Executives Institute, the Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion. He was an avid golfer and also enjoyed skiing, fishing, and other water sports with his friends and family. The Conley family would like to thank Donovan Moore for the caregiving and friendship he provided to Bill this past year, and Joy for her gift of dignity and compassion. We would also like to recognize and thank the McLean Hospice Care team for their professionalism and unending support. You were all a natural extension of our family and helped us tremendously through the final days of our journey. There are no calling hours. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held this Thursday, July 17th at 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Church, 942 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations in Bill's name be sent to McLean Hospice Care at 75 Great Pond Road, Simsbury, CT 06070.
