Karen Lynn Bartis Obituary

Karen Lynn Bartis, 66, of Wethersfield, formerly of West Hartford, died Saturday, July 19, 2014 at Saint Francis Hospital. The daughter of the late Joseph and Nellie (Melinsky) Bartis, Karen was born in Hartford and grew up in West Hartford. She received her undergraduate degree from Nasson College (ME), and master's degrees from Temple University (PA) and St. Joseph University (CT). Karen worked tirelessly in the non-profit community for over 40 years, serving children and adults in need. She was the Executive Director of The Shelter for Women (Alison Gill Lodge and Gray Lodge) and My Sister's Place. Karen served on the Board of Directors of CT Nonprofits, formerly CAN. She was active in legislative advocacy efforts on behalf of the clients she served. She worked at Mt. Sinai Hospital, group homes, foster care agencies and most recently at CMHA. She also taught/tutored students through the Kaplan Education Center. Karen loved music; theater; eating out, Portofino's in Kensington was a favorite, and being by the water, especially at her cottage in New Hampshire. She enjoyed time with friends, helping others and travel through Europe when she was younger. She was a voracious reader, fiercely independent, kind, generous and proud of her accomplishments. She greatly valued friendship and loyalty. Besides her parents, Karen was predeceased by her brother, Thomas Bartis, her aunt, Helen Melinsky, her dear friends, Linda Grant and Richard Kuziak, and her beloved cat, Scamper. She leaves her friends, Kathleen Mucha of East Hartford and Tracey Walker of East Haddam. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, 136 South Main Street, West Hartford from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 6:30 p.m. with the Reverend David E.
