Dr.  Virginia S. Hale Obituary

Dr. Virginia S. Hale, 76, of West Hartford, CT died peacefully on Saturday July 19, 2014. Her final days were spent surrounded by family, friends and the caring staff at Duncaster's Caleb-Hitchcock Health Center in Bloomfield, CT. Virginia was born on June 26, 1938 in Hartford, Connecticut, daughter of the late Edward and Gladys Shea, and spent her childhood growing up in Wilson. She excelled in school, skipping several grades and eventually graduating from Mount St. Joseph Academy at the age of 16. She went on to receive degrees from Boston University, the University of Hartford (1963), and Temple University in Philadelphia, PA (1965). In 1972 Virginia earned a Ph.D. in English from the University of Connecticut. She had a long career as Professor of English at the University of Hartford where she also served as the Chair of the English Department from 1985-92. She continued teaching after her retirement, finishing her most recent course in May of 2014. Virginia was proud of her academic tenure at the University of Hartford where she also Directed the AUC program, was a member Emeriti Association, and a Golden Hawk. In addition to numerous academic publications, Virginia was the celebrated author of A Woman of Business: The Life of Beatrice Fox Auerbach and achieved great success lecturing across the state of Connecticut. During her leisure time, she loved traveling, teaching, playing the piano, and listening to music. Virginia also enjoyed swimming, attending theatre, and watching the Boston Red Sox - she was a die-hard fan. But what she excelled at most was being a wonderful mother and grandmother. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Albert Hale; a brother, Ramon Bieri; and stepson, Randy Hale. Virginia leaves two daughters, Elisa G. Hale and her husband Donald Grove of Cobalt, CT and Susanna Norton and her husband Seth of West Hartford, CT; a beloved granddaughter, Olivia; a brother, Richard "Dick" Shea and his wife Carole of Marlborough, CT; four stepchildren and several cousins, nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Friday, August 1, 2014 at St. Gabriel Church, 379 Broad St., Windsor, CT 06095 with burial following in Windsor Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Her family will receive friends on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at Carmon Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor, CT 06095. A memorial celebration in honor of Professor Emeritus Virginia S. Hale will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, October 3, 2014 at the University of Hartford, Konover Campus Center. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the or the Humane Society.
