Josephine Veronica Stankiewicz, 87, of Whispering Pines in Avon, CT, beloved wife of the late Valentine A. Stankiewicz, died Thursday, July 24, 2014 at John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington, CT. She was born November 4, 1926 in Port Washington, NY, daughter of the late Bolick and Victoria Palawsky, and had lived in Port Washington prior to moving to Connecticut thirty years ago. Throughout Josephine's lifetime, she enjoyed playing bridge, volunteering, puzzles, flowers, and the Red Sox. Josephine was a great storyteller of history and a lover of animals. She is survived by her six children, Gail Hemming and her husband Ken of Simsbury, CT, Steven Stankiewicz and his wife Laura of Richmond, VA, Peter Stankiewicz and his significant other Debbie Hilt of Athens, GA, Alan Stankiewicz of East Syracuse, NY, Amy Lefebvre and her husband Bryant of Lakeville, MA, and Paul Stankiewicz of Southhampton NY; her grandchildren, Melissa McWeeny and her husband Tucker, Rebecca Hagen, Ned Stankiewicz, Shane Stankiewicz and his wife Julie, and Daniel Stankiewicz; and her great grandchildren Cailynn, Declan, Madaket, Wyatt, Alexander, Brooklyn, Daniel Jr., and Lily Ann. Josephine is survived by her sister Barbara Mallon of Port Washington, NY and her brother Walter Palawsky and his wife Josephine of Port Washington, NY. She was predeceased by her sister Bernice DiGeronimo, married to Gus DiGeronimo of Farmingdale, NY. Josephine also leaves an extended, loving family. Friends may call to pay their respects at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury, CT on Saturday, August 2, 2014 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. A private service and burial will be held in Port Washington, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Josephine Stankiewicz's name to the St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to the North Shore Animal League, 25 Davis Avenue, Port Washington, NY 11050.
