Edward C. Smith Obituary

Edward C. Smith, 82, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday July 29, 2014. Ed was born on September 9, 1931 in Hartford a son of the late Sterling B. and Harriet (Chamberlain) Smith. Ed was a graduate of Mount Herman School in Northfield MA, Class of 1950, where he was an All New England soccer player. After graduation from Springfield College, he joined the US Army. He retired from Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance as a Vice President. In retirement, Ed was a youth sports coach at St. Paul Catholic High School, coaching both the girls' tennis and soccer teams. Along with Mary, they were longtime volunteers at St. Vincent DePaul Mission of Bristol. Ed made many friends along the way with his wit and humor. He was a long time member of Chippanee Country Club, and enjoyed his vacations at Hawks Nest Beach. He leaves many friends at his second home in East Otis, Massachusetts. Ed considered his Otis friends his family. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary (Moody) Smith, his two sons Richard Smith and Robert Smith and his wife Rose, his daughter and son-in-law Susan and Timothy Webster. "Poppy" was most proud of his grandchildren: Taylor Webster, Patrick, Luke, Benjamin and Phoebe Smith. His greatest joy was being with them and attending their sporting events. Ed also leaves his brother, Robert M. Smith and his wife Mary of Jupiter, FL. He was predeceased by a granddaughter Christina Rose. Calling hours will be held on Friday August 1, 2014 from 4 to 7 PM at O'Brien Funeral Home, 24 Lincoln Ave., Forestville/Bristol followed by a service at the funeral home at 7PM.
