Dolores Kempton Obituary

Dolores (Sklenka) Kempton, 76, of Bristol, widow of Willard Kempton, died on Tuesday (July 29, 2014) at home with her family by her side. She bravely faced her short journey with leukemia, successfully determined to do it her own way. She was born on February 6, 1938 in Terryville and was a daughter of the late William and Genevieve (Blecharczyk) Sklenka. As a young mother, Dolores worked nights at New Departure. Later in life she worked in the high school cafeteria for, accidentally, one year past her retirement age. Once her grandson was born, she began her new career as the best grandma. She spent her time loving and spoiling her grandson every day of his life. She happily attended every game, event, or function in which her grandson participated. Dolores was a devoted member of St. Anthony's Church, Bristol. She was an excellent cook whose standby dishes were never made the same way twice, but always with perfect results. She enjoyed going to weekly movies with her son, and watching "NCIS". Dolores loved to travel, whether with family or friends. She had great vacations with her daughter and grandson on trips to Disney, Rocking Horse Ranch, and yearly trips to York Beach, Maine - where, defying the odds, she visited one last time this July. Some of her other favorite trips were to Italy, Atlantis, Hawaii, and the Grand Canyon. She cherished time with "the girls", her dear friends Karen, Maureen, and Pat. Dolores is survived by her children whom she loved dearly: Debra Kempton and her spouse, Colleen of Plainville, Greg Kempton of Bristol, and Donna Kempton and her cherished and beloved grandson, Brett Kempton of Bristol. The oldest of five children, she is survived by two brothers and sisters in law: Donald and Josephine Sklenka of Bristol and Michael and Laurie Sklenka of Terryville; two sisters and a brother in law: Joanne Palaia of Bristol and Juliette and Frank Sansone of North Carolina; a brother in law and sister in law: Louis and Carol Kempton of Southington; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother in law, Rocco Palaia. The family would like to thank the kind and caring staff at the Bristol Hospital Cancer Center, as well as the staff from Bristol Hospice, especially Jill Lincoln, who provided such loving care and support to Dolores and her family. Funeral services will be held on Friday (August 1, 2014) at 9 AM from Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Ave., Bristol to St. Anthony Church, 111 School St., Bristol, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bristol. Relatives and friends may call at Funk Funeral Home today (Thursday) between 4 and 7 PM. Donations can be made in Dolores' memory to Bristol Hospital Hospice, PO Box 977, Bristol, CT, 06011-0977. Please visit Dolores' memorial website at www.FunkFuneralHome.com
