Helen Schildgen Obituary

Helen Schildgen, 92, of Tolland passed away peacefully on Monday, August 4, 2014 at Blair Manor Nursing Home in Enfield, where she lived for four years. She was born on St. Patrick's Day, 1922 in New Haven, and is predeceased by her parents, Rose (Garson) and Joseph Chernin of New Haven and Miami, FL; her sister Lillian Wildstein of Hollywood, FL; and her brother Allan Chernine of Mission Hills, CA. Helen was the first in her family born in the US after they emigrated from Russia. Helen graduated from Commercial High School in New Haven, and enjoyed taking some college courses later in life. Her first job was at Winchester Repeating Arms inspecting ammunition. Later jobs were as a receptionist and secretary. Helen moved to Georgia as a soldier's young bride, then settled in Hamden to raise her family. She later lived in West Haven, Milford, Naugatuck and Brandon, VT. After being widowed she moved to Tolland in 2002 to be near family. In her youth Helen loved the library, was an avid reader, and enjoyed writing. She also loved music, dancing, and once played a "Princessa" in a community theater production. Her creativity shone in the annual costume contest at the Surf Club in West Haven in the late '50s. Helen was predeceased by her devoted husband, Francis J. Schildgen of Naugatuck and Brandon, VT. She greatly missed her older daughter, M. Joan Singer Soper, who passed away in 2007. She is survived by her loving daughter Betty-Lou Singer Griffin and son-in-law Gerald F. Griffin of Tolland. She leaves three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Melissa Soper Wells of Searsport, ME and her children Kory and Ashten; Matthew Griffin and his wife Theresa, now of Medford, MA; and Jonathan Griffin, his wife Rachel and son Jonah, of Manchester and now Arlington, MA. She also leaves nieces, nephews and their families; and friends at Winding River Village. Thank you to the Blair Manor staff and Vernon VNA Hospice who helped make her final days peaceful.? A memorial service will be held in September at the Tolland Memorial Funeral Home. Friends and family are invited to share a memory, poem, reading or photos. Memorial donations may be made to the Winding River Village Activity Fund, 1127 Tolland Stage Rd., Tolland, CT 06084.
