Sister Susan Carlin Obituary

SISTER SUSAN CARLIN (Sister Mary Jeanette) of the Sisters of Mercy died peacefully Wednesday (August 13, 2014) surrounded by her sisters. The daughter of Patrick and Catherine (Greene) Carlin, Sister Susan was born in Richmond Hill, New York and grew up in Stratford, CT. She entered the Sisters of Mercy immediately after graduation from Lauralton Hall in Milford in 1952, professing religious vows on August 16, 1955. Sister earned a B.A. in Elementary Education from the Diocesan Sisters' College in Madison, CT and her M.A. in Pastoral Ministry from St. Joseph College, now the University of St. Joseph in West Hartford. Susan taught in several schools in the state, including St. Francis, Naugatuck and St. Joseph, New London where she was also principal before changing ministry direction, serving for 17 years as Parish Minister at St. Vincent Ferrer in Naugatuck. In 2001 Susan was elected to the Leadership Team of the Sisters of Mercy in Connecticut and at the end of her term of office continued serving the sisters as Pastoral Minister, having earned a certificate in Spiritual Direction from the Spiritual Life Center in Bloomfield. Simultaneously she volunteered her services to the people of St. Mark Church in West Hartford, coordinating the RCIA process in the parish. A prayerful woman of great dignity, patience and deep compassion, like Catherine McAuley, Sister Susan possessed a gift for accepting people as they are. Encouraging and affirming, she had a good connection with both the young and the old, enabling them to see God in themselves and others. Susan loved to laugh! She also loved her God, her religious community, her family and friends, her Irish heritage - and her cat Tinkerbell! A close friend recently described Susan as one who "lived heartily". Susan is survived by her brother and sister-in-law Peter and Caroline Carlin of Stratford; her niece and nephews Susan and John Iannamorato of Stow, MA, Michael and Katia Carlin of Natick, MA and Brian and Alicia Carlin of Huntington; her long-time friend, Mercy Associate Nancy Hoey, with whom Susan made her home; many friends, and her Mercy family. Sister Susan's life will be celebrated with a Mass of the Resurrection at St. Mark the Evangelist Church, 467 So. Quaker Lane, West Hartford on Monday, August 18 at 6:30PM. Prior to the funeral Mass she will be waked in the Chapel at St. Mary Home, 2021 Albany Ave., West Hartford on Monday from 2:30-4:30pm. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery on Tuesday at 9:00AM. Those wishing to make a donation in Sister's memory are asked to consider the Sisters of Mercy, c/o 55 East Cedar St., Newington 06111. Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home has care of arrangements.
