Sister Helen Hart Obituary


Sister Helen Hart, CSJ (Sister Mary Kieran), a member of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, West Hartford, CT died at Lourdes Health Care Center in Wilton, CT on August 13, 2014. Sister Helen was born in Newton, MA on February 7, 1928 of the late John J. and Josephine (Connolly) Hart. Sister Helen graduated from St. Augustine School in 1941 and from Mount Saint Joseph Academy in 1945 and was accepted into the Sisters of Saint Joseph on October 2, 1945. She celebrated her perpetual Profession of Vows on August 24, 1951. Sister was 86 years of age and had been in Religious Life for 69 years. Sister Helen earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Diocesan Sisters College, West Hartford, CT and a Master's Degree in History from Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. Sister Helen taught in elementary schools in the Dioceses of Bridgeport and Springfield and the Archdiocese of Hartford. She was principal of St. Mary School in Windsor Locks, and after its closing, Sister taught in the Windsor Locks Public School System for three years. She then was principal of St. Bridget School in Manchester. In 1991, the Sisters of St. Joseph, recognizing the educational needs of persons living in the Charter Oak area, asked Sister Helen to open Project Hope, Inc., where for ten years the GED program enabled many to earn their General Education Diploma, thereby, giving them the opportunity to obtain employment. Sister was a tireless and conscientious worker who loved her students and staff in every school she ministered as teacher or principal. Her interest in each individual person made her loved by all. Sister Helen was predeceased by her brother and sister-in-law, John and Madeline Hart, and her nephew, Jack Hart, and her sister and brother-in-law, Clare and Bill Daniel. Sister is survived by her Sisters in Community, her niece and nephew-in-law, Jane Daniel and Rex Hill, her nephew, Terry Daniel, and his daughter, Kelly Daniel, her niece, Maureen Hart Kieber, and families of Chris Hart, Erin Kieber and David Christman, as well as two cousins in Ireland, Kathleen and Philomena Harte. Relatives and friends may call at the Convent of Mary Immaculate in West Hartford, CT on Monday, August 18, from 3:00 - 6:45 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 7:00 p.m. in St. Joseph Chapel. Burial services will be held on Tuesday, August 19, at 9:00 a.m. from the Convent of Mary Immaculate to the Sisters of St. Joseph Cemetery in West Hartford. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, 27 Park Road, West Hartford, CT 06119.
