Marjorie Louise (Fairweather) Salmon, 90, of Vernon passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, August 24, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. She joins her adoring and beloved husband of 65 years, Merritt, who predeceased her in July of 2010. Born in Hartford on July 21, 1924 she was the daughter of the late Frank and Louise Fairweather. Along with her parents she is predeceased by her brothers Howard and Kenneth Fairweather and her sister Marilyn Matassa and their spouses. She is survived by her four children whom she deeply loved, Lesley Merena of Stratford, CT; Laura Volz and husband David of Woodstock, CT; Merritt (Doug) Salmon and wife Gylene of New Hampton, NH, and Nancy Bullock and husband Clifford of Ellington, CT. She leaves 5 grandchildren: Claudette LePage and husband Darren of NJ, Kurtis Merena and wife Dorothy of AZ, Ryan Salmon of NH, Renee and husband Shanen Main of NH, and Joshua Salmon-Walker of NH. Five step-grandchildren: Scott Volz and wife Susan of FL, Laura Poulin of CT, Brandonn Pfister of NH, David Bullock and financee Carrie Lapworth of CT and Amie Broughal and husband Zachary of CT. In addition she leaves 3 great-grandchildren: Colby and Emily Merena of AZ, Autumn Main of NH, and 8 step-great-grandchildren William Volz of FL, Katherine, Matthew and Sarah Poulin of CT, Khloee Pfister of NH, Katrina and Jasmin LePage of NJ and Kaeden Bullock of CT; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. Marjorie was a graduate of Manchester High School, Class of 1942 and was on the class reunion committee for many years. She was employed as a secretary at the Hartford Connecticut Trust Company until 1947. After her children were in school she worked for 20 years as a bookkeeper at the former Vernon Howard Johnson's restaurant until she retired to travel with her husband. They enjoyed trips to Spain, Majorca, Portugal, Jamaica, Bermuda, Canary Islands, Curacao and throughout the U.S. Marjorie was an amazing and special lady who maintained close wonderful friendships not only with family but with people who's lives she touched all the way back to elementary school. She and several of these friends gathered weekly for card games, tea socials, and luncheons. She was never at a loss for visitors or phone calls that filled her days with laughter and love. She was a member and former deaconess of The First Congregational Church of Vernon and a member of the Manchester Memorial Hospital Auxiliary working as a cashier, inventory clerk and volunteer in the hospital's gift shop. The family wishes to thank The Connecticut Hospice, Inc. and Companions and Homemakers for the excellent and compassionate care their staffs provided which allowed them to keep promises made to their parents and to grant her wish to remain with her family in the familiar surroundings of her home. The family will hold a memorial service Friday, August 29, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at the Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main Street, Manchester. Burial will be in East Cemetery, Manchester. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 10:00 am until the time of the service.
