Elizabeth Lincoln Hatch White Obituary

Elizabeth Lincoln Hatch White, 90, of Wallingford, formally of Norwalk for 55 years, died on Wednesday, August 27,2014. Known as Betty, she was born in Hartford CT to the late Virgil Baldwin Hatch and Eliza Lincoln Ferriss Hatch. Betty was the salutatorian of Bulkeley High School class of 1942. She graduated from the Teachers College of Connecticut (today CCSU) in December 1945. Later she attended the University of Connecticut School of Social Work. She taught English and Social Studies at Berlin High School and fourth grade in Middletown for four years. Betty married Abbott W. White in 1950. They had four children and settled in Norwalk where Betty was active in her children's classrooms and Scout troops. She was a very active member of Grace Episcopal Church, including teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, president of the Women's Guild, member of the Vestry, member of prayer groups, and keeping in touch with members who were shut-in. Betty was a long time member of the Church Women United of Norwalk, and an officer of the Norwalk-Wilton chapter of AARP. She was co-editor of the chapter newsletter, did publicity for the chapter and was chairman of the Sunshine Committee. Her other interests included reading, letter writing, and taking and receiving photographs, especially of her family. Betty enjoyed making new friends at Pond Ridge at Ashlar Village where she resided with Abbott for the last 2 1/2 years. She particularly liked participating in the Hearth program. In addition to her beloved husband of 64 years, she is survived by her daughters Margaret Phillips (Abe) of Forest, VA, Janice White of Litchfield, Joan Tangney of Wallingford, and her son David White (Kathleen) of Durham; grandchildren Jonathan Phillips (Marie), Deborah Vereen(Morris), Benjamin Mager (Mariah), Daniel Mager, Michael Tangney (Jennifer), Melissa Tangney, and Jeffrey White (Jenny); great grandchildren Hunter and Brandon Phillips, and Aurora, Kiera, and Tristan Mager. She is also survived by a brother in law, Kenneth White, and his family. In addition to her parents, Betty was predeceased by her brother Charles B. Hatch, sister in law Beatrice White, brother in law and sister in law Alton and Lucy White, son in law Alfred Tangney, and infant granddaughter Elizabeth Mager. Calling hours will be held between 10:30 and 11:30 on Saturday August 30 at Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave. Norwalk, followed by a service there at 11:30. The Rev. Diana M. Rogers will officiate. Interment will be at Willowbrook Cemetery, Westport. Memorial Contributions may be made in Betty's name to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America and the .
