Donald A. Sutherland Obituary


Donald A. Sutherland, 73, of Enfield, Beloved husband of Barbara (Miller) Sutherland for 50 years, entered into eternal peace Saturday Aug. 30, 2014 at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. One of seven children, Donald was a son of the late Donald G. and Blanche (Tessier) Sutherland. He was born November 15, 1940 and raised in Northampton, MA where he graduated from St. Michael's High School. He then attended Holyoke Community College where he studied Business Administration. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. Donald had resided in the Enfield community for 43 years and was retired from Gartner Electric after 25 years with the company. Following his retirement, he worked for Home Depot in Enfield for 15 years. Donald was an active member and communicant of St. Bernard Church in Enfield where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and taught CCD. He also had a passion for music and singing and demonstrated his musical talents in the St. Bernard's Choir. Donald was an avid hockey fan and shared his love of the sport with his son through coaching and refereeing for the Enfield Hockey Assn. Besides his wife Barbara, Donald is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Sutherland of Windsor, CT; a sister, Marie Powers and her husband Bob of FL; a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Draggoo of Norton, MA; his granddaughters, Courtney Germanio and her husband Jimmy, and Jaden Draggoo; two great grandsons, Seth and James Germanio; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Sutherland of Greenfield, MA and Pat Sutherland of Southampton, MA; a brother-in-law, Phil Miller of Houston, TX and many loving nieces and nephews. Donald was predeceased by a son, Donald (Chuck) Sutherland, three brothers, David, Dallas, and Douglas Sutherland; and two sisters, Sue Massey, and Norah Chunglo. His family will receive relatives and friends for calling hours Sat. Sept. 6th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Rd., Enfield.
