AREL, Paul N. Paul N. Arel, 73, beloved husband of Susan A. (Shapiro) Arel of South Windsor, died Friday (January 2, 2009) at Manchester Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness. Born in Leominster, MA on November 12, 1935, son of the late Joseph and Marie (LaSelle) Arel he had lived in South Windsor for the last 35 years. In addition to his wife, he leaves two sons; Paul N. Arel, Jr., of Harrison, OH and Daniel Arel, of Jackson Center, OH, two daughters; Jamie Arel Hendzel of Wethersfield and Alison Arel of South Windsor, two brothers; Robert Arel of Hartford and Gerard Arel of Fitchburg, MA, four grandchildren; Aaron, Christina and Matthew Arel and Sydney Tsolas and a great grandchild, Aden. Paul served his country proudly with the U.S. Marine Corps. An internationally acclaimed martial arts Hall-of-Famer, he founded the Kokondo Karate Jukido Jujutsu system in 1970. Since then, thousands saluted him as their "Sensei." Mr. Arel did unsurpassed honor to his title of "Shihan" (teacher-of-teachers) and spared no effort on his students. He was one of the first westerners ever to earn a black belt. Mr. Arel opened the first martial arts school (dojo) in Connecticut and helped organize the first North American Martial Arts Tournament at Hartford's Bushnell Memorial. He leaves this vast legacy to his grateful and loyal students of the International Kokondo Association. A memorial service will be held, Tuesday, 11 a.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor. Burial will follow in Wapping Cemetery, South Windsor.
