Obituary Condolences

BROOKES, Verne R. Verne R. Brookes, 82, of Silver Springs, FL., formerly of Haddam, husband of 50 years to the late Mary (Corcoran) Brookes, died Thursday, (March 12, 2009) at Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala, FL. He was born in Middletown, the son of the late Arthur W. and Barbara (McKean) Brookes. He was the first Eagle Scout in Haddam. Verne graduated from Deep River High School in 1944 having served as class president for his junior and senior years. He then received his Bachelor's degree from Hillyer College now the University of Hartford where he was captain of the baseball team. A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps, Air Sea Rescue. Verne later retired in 1986 to Ocala, FL., after 30 years with General Motors Insurance Corp. as a Senior Claims Adjuster. He was a 52 year member of the Village Park Society of Haddam and a member of the Haddam Democratic Town Committee, as chairman for over 30 years. He was on the Board of Directors for Brainerd Library, served for many years as a moderator for Haddam town meetings, and was a corporator of the former Farmer's and Mechanics Bank. Verne was also a Justice of the Peace for 40 years, as well as a Life Gold Master Bridge player was a member of the Ocala, FL. Duplicate Bridge Club. He is survived by his children, Sharon Mathews and her husband, Patrick of Sturbridge, MA., Scott Brookes and his wife, Audrey of Haddam, Shelley Brookes of Haddam, and Stuart Brookes and his wife, Shelley of Haddam; his brother, Duane W. Brookes of Westbrook; his sister, Beverly Morse of Sturbridge, MA; and 13 grandchildren, Stephen, Greg, Brendan and Bridget Mathews, Chelsea and Matt Brookes, Joe and Chelsey Seagrave, Dayle and Lindsay Bensenhaver, Kate-Lynn Brookes, Justine Wetzel and Jordan Brookes. He was predeceased by his brother, Lyle Brookes and three sisters, Norma Randall, Marilyn McRoy, and Barbara Hooker. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Haddam, 905 Saybrook Rd., Haddam. Burial, with Military Honors, will be in Haddam Center Cemetery, Haddam.
