Donahue, Evelyn (Gilbert) Evelyn (Gilbert) Donahue, 84, of Manchester passed away peacefully Sunday (July 3, 2005) at the Salmon Brook Healthcare Facility in Glastonbury. Evelyn was born in Manchester on August 18, 1920. She was the wife of the late William Donahue. She was predeceased by her parents Lillian Highter and Harold Gilbert and a brother, Ernest Gilbert. Evelyn was a life long resident of Manchester. She retired from Manchester Modes in 1980. She then spent her time volunteering at the Senior Center preparing meals weekly for the retirees. She also volunteered at area churches day care. She was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church and a member of the Ladies Alter Guild and Episcopal Church Women for many years. Evelyn loved to cook. She was the baker of cakes for all the family celebrations. Everyone will remember her desserts especially her famous butter cookies, no one can make them like she did. She had two passions in her later years; sweets and all that glittered. She was a people person and could find the good in everyone. She was a happy soul and loved to laugh. We will all remember her sparkling eyes and her smile. Evelyn is survived by her brothers and sister-in-laws, Arthur and Marjorie Highter of Bolton, Harold and Mary Gilbert of Sebring, Florida and a sister and brother-in-law, Catherine and John Anderson of Hardy, Virginia. Her cousins Doris and Glenn Griswold of East Hartford, Marion and Charles Chaponis of South Windsor, Faith McKenna and Michael Baldt of Manchester and many nieces, nephews and cousins of multiple generations. She also leaves her goddaughter and niece, Dawn Griswold, and her very special friend, niece and care giver, who made the last years of her life happy ones, Tina McKenna and her special life long friends Elsie Loney and Ilsa Demko both of Manchester. The family would like to send a special thanks to all the staff at the Salmon Brook Health Care Facility for all their care and compassion shown to Evelyn during her stay.
