Jean MCCARTHY Obituary
MCCARTHY, Jean Jean Starin McCarthy, of Coventry and formerly of Manchester, beloved wife of the late Daniel J. McCarthy, died Monday (September 27, 2010) after a valiant struggle with complications after heart surgery. She was born October 23, 1926 in Manchester, CT, daughter of the late Norah (Campbell) Starin and the late Martin W. Starin and attended Manchester Schools. Jean and Dan were sweethearts from the age of 18 and lived their love story for 66 years. Jean married Dan after his return from World War II starting soon after on a 29 year career at Pratt & Whitney, retiring as a Buyer for Master Mechanics. Jean known as an "artist extraordinaire", was always painting, from her early days doing scenery for the Sock & Buskin and for many years in oils and later in watercolors. Jean studied with renowned local teachers and for a number of years hosted classes along with her artist buddies in her home studio. She enjoyed being a member of the Manchester Art Association and served as its Secretary. Jean was also a lifelong collector of antiques, she especially loved Asian art pieces and all forms of glass. Her large library of antiques and collectibles books helped with Jean and Dan's business selling antiques at shows throughout Connecticut. Second to art and antiques, Mrs. McCarthy had a passion for the history of World War II, especially the European theatre. From her own family, Jean loved to recount the histories of her Saskatchewan pioneer and New York Huguenot ancestors. Jean was also quite a competitive card player, enjoying lively tournament play with friends and family. After moving to Coventry, she loved to be on the porch watching the deer families nibbling through the yard or picking bouquets of flowers from her garden. Along with Dan, Jean shared a love of poetry, their special favorite of over 60 years; The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. Jean is survived by her daughter Deborah McCarthy-Platz and her husband Donald Platz of Coventry, her brother Martin Starin and his wife Dorothy of Austin, TX, sister-in-laws Blanche Senna and Elizabeth McCarthy, several nieces and wonderful friends. She was predeceased by her husband Daniel J. McCarthy. Funeral services will be held Friday (October 1, 2010) at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 41 Park St., Manchester. Burial will be at East Cemetery, Manchester. Calling hours will be held Thursday from 4 - 7 p.m. at the Watkins Funeral Home, 142 East Center St., Manchester. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sloane-Kettering Cancer Center, 1275 York Ave., New York, NY. 10065.
