Robert M. ROTH Obituary
ROTH, Robert M. Robert M. Roth passed away on Monday (October 18, 2010) after a remarkable life as a loving husband, caring father, avid golfer and sports fan, and dedicated community leader and citizen. Bob was born on March 6, 1930 in Milwaukee, WI to Stanley and Elsie Erman Roth. A graduate of Scarsdale High School and Colby College, Bob served in the Navy from 1951 - 1955 and was a proud veteran of the Korean War. At the time of his discharge, he was a first lieutenant. It was at Colby that Bob met and later married his wonderful wife, Helen Harper Palen Roth. They were married in Waterbury on April 16, 1955. Early in their marriage, they lived in Florida, Delaware, and then Connecticut, where they have been West Hartford residents for 45 years. Bob worked for Waddell and Reed as a Stock Broker until 1967 when he started Mark Securities, Inc. in West Hartford Center. Following Mark Securities, he co-managed the TRIO fund until 2010. Bob umpired Little League baseball during the summers and coached the West Hartford Midget Eagles Football Team in the fall for many years. When Bob recognized there were not as many opportunities for girls in sports as there were for boys, he co-founded the West Hartford Girls Softball League, still going strong today, and sponsored one of the original teams, Karen Associates. Bob served on the Board of Education for two terms beginning in 1974. He was an avid golfer, with three hole-in-ones on his resume, and served on many committees at the Hartford Golf Club. His favorite retirement "gig" was rating golf courses throughout Connecticut. Bob was incredibly gracious in his support of local charities and organizations. He was a loyal New York Giants, Red Sox, and UConn Huskies fan, especially the girl's basketball team, and really enjoyed the mid-2000's when all of his teams were on top! He leaves behind to celebrate this inspirational life, his loving wife, Helen, his three children Mark and his wife Pamela Roth; Karen and her husband Steven Ward; and Jeff. Also, his beloved grandchildren, Brandon Oates; Kinsey, Kesslyn, and Kylie Ward; Madeline, Molly, and Owen Roth. Calling hours will be at Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Ave., West Hartford, on Friday (October 22, 2010) from 4 - 8 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at the First Church of Christ Congregational, 12 South Main St., West Hartford, on Saturday (October 23, 2010) at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: The American Lung Association, Riverfront Recapture (1 Hartford Square W, Hartford, CT 06106), or Oak Hill School (120 Holcomb St., Hartford, CT 06112).
