SHUKIS, George J. George John Shukis, 88, died peacefully surrounded by his three daughters on Tuesday, (January 18, 2011) in Towson, MD after receiving kind, compassionate care from the staff of Gilchrist Hospice, and previously by the wonderful staff of Sunrise of Columbia Assisted Living. He is survived by his daughters and their families: Georganna and Paul Goodale of Windham, NH and their children Andrew, Dean and Olivia; Debbie and Jamie Barrow of Elkridge, MD and their children Christopher, Douglas, Kevin and Madison; Mary-Lisa and Frank Bergonzi of Westport, CT and their children Vivianna, Frankie and Grace. He is predeceased by his parents, Peter and Mary Shukis, and by his brothers Peter, Edward and Frank Shukis. He is also predeceased by his ex-wife Anna Ruffino Shukis, to whom he was married for 42 years. George was born and raised in Hartford, CT and graduated from Hartford Technical Trade School. He enlisted in the Navy and served as an Aviation Torpedo man's Mate Third Class during World War II. He then worked as a tool and die maker for many years retiring from Carling Switch of West Hartford in 1987. He took great pride in his skills as a machinist and was also a proficient craftsman and lifelong gardener, evident in the way he meticulously cared for his garden and home on Walkley Road in West Hartford, where he lived for 31 years. He found great joy in spending time with his daughters and their families and was selfless in sharing his love, time and talents. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, friendly and easy-going nature, and his contentment with the simple pleasures of life. His daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren will never forget his unconditional love and will be forever blessed. A Mass celebrating of the life of George John Shukis will be held on Saturday, January 22 at 12 p.m. at St. Pius X Church, 310 Westfield St., Middletown, CT. Family and friends may call at the Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown, CT on Friday, January 21 from 4 to 7 p.m. A private burial will be held at the State Veterans Cemetery, Middletown, CT.
