Eugene C. SMITH Obituary
SMITH, Eugene C. Eugene C. "Smitty" Smith, 93, a resident of Simsbury for over 15 years, formerly of Milford and Hollis, NH, died late Tuesday evening (January 18, 2011), at the McLean Home in Simsbury, surrounded by his loving wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was born in Quarryville, PA, a son of the late Eugene Carter Smith and Edna A. (Aument) Smith. He was a graduate of Coatesville High School in Coatesville, PA, and received his B.S. degree from the former Parks Air College currently known as St. Louis University. Parks Air College was the first federally certified school of aviation. Eugene "Smitty", a nickname given by his fellow colleagues, began a long and successful career spanning over thirty years as an air traffic controller and supervisor. He retired from the New England Air Traffic Center which is now known as Boston Air Route Traffic Control Center based in Nashua, New Hampshire. Eugene spent a number of years in the air traffic control center at Logan Airport in Boston and in his early years he began his career with original Boston-Maine Airways later known as Northeast Airlines which provided service from Boston to Caribou, Maine, via Portland. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Catherine (Bishop) Smith and leaves three loving daughters, Margaret E. Williamson of New York, NY, Alison S. Anderson and her husband Reverend Fred Anderson of Fiskedale, MA, and Barbara J. Porter and her husband Bruce of East Granby, CT. He was predeceased by a son, Robert F. Smith. Eugene is also survived by his brother, Donald A. Smith of Hightstown, NJ; his seven grandchildren, John S., Gregory K., and Susan C. Anderson, Janet Ripel, Diane Stephens, Ellen Henline and Charles Porter; and six great grandchildren. A graveside service and spring burial will take place in East Cemetery in Hollis, New Hampshire. At his family's request there will be no calling hours. Arrangements are by the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook St., Granby.
