Helen MCLENDON Obituary


Helen (Dell) McLendon, 85, a resident of West Hartford since 1964 and formally of Hartford, died early Friday morning, (August 5, 2011) at Uconn Health Center in Farmington. She was born in Dublin, Georgia a daughter of the late John H. and Della Mae (Hunter) Dell and was a graduate of Oconee High School in Dublin. Helen continued her education enrolling at Fort Valley State College and later earning her undergraduate degree in history from Savannah State College as well as a Master's degree in Education from the University of Michigan and Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from St. Joseph Collage in West Hartford. Helen retired in 1995 after many years as a teacher at the Lewis Fox Middle School in Hartford. She currently was a licensed real estate agent and broker who owned and operated DELLMAC Realty Company in West Hartford for over thirty years and was a member of the Greater Hartford Association of Realtors, and the CT Realtors Association. Helen, a licensed marital and family therapist also owned the Turning Point Counseling Agency in Bloomfield for over fifteen years. She was an active and vibrant member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in West Hartford where she served as a former deacon, Stephen Minister and Elder. Helen was the devoted wife of the late Isaiah H. McLendon, who died on September 26, 1996 and leaves two loving children, Tanja M. McLendon and Anthony I. McLendon and his wife Debbie Ingalls, both of West Hartford; her former daughter-in-law, whom she adored as her own daughter, Janis L. Spurlock of Willimantic; her brother, Nathan Dell and his wife Willie of Richmond, VA; and her sister, Sarah Spence of Hartford; three loving grandchildren, Sharlamer J. McLendon of Hartford, and Nia B. and Toni K. McLendon of West Hartford; nine nieces and nephews, among whom is a special nephew, Royce K. Dell of Bristol; as well as many dear and special friends, colleagues, former students and church family who will sadly miss her. She was predeceased by her daughter, Helen A. McLendon who died in 1999 and her siblings, John H. Dell, Waletha Johnson, Nathaniel Dell and Evelyn Dell.
Her funeral will be held on Thursday, (August 11, 2011) at 11 a.m. at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2080 Boulevard, with burial to follow at 1 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery, 200 Whitman Ave., both in West Hartford. Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday evening from 5-8 p.m. at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor.
