McQUEENEY, Dennis M.
Dennis M. McQueeney, 63, of Virginia Beach, VA and formerly of East Hartford, CT, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday (May 20, 2012). Born in Hartford on June 19, 1948, a son of the late Donald and Ina (Sullivan) McQueeney, he had been a life-long resident of East Hartford prior to moving to Virginia Beach. Dennis was a graduate of George J. Penney High School in East Hartford, Class of 1966. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War where he was a member of the B-Company 716th of Military Police. He was hired by the East Hartford Police Department in May of 1970 and served as a Patrol Officer until 1979 when he became an Investigator in the Criminal Investigations Division. He worked his way up through the ranks until he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in January of 1988 and named OIC of the Internal Affairs Division. Lieutenant McQueeney was named Acting Operations Commander in 1990 and then returned to Patrol Lieutenant for many years. He had received many letters of commendation and thanks from the citizens of East Hartford over the many years of service, as well as Departmental commendations and the Distinguished Service Citation. He retired in January of 2003 after 32 years of dedicated service. Dennis was a member of the VFW and American Legion and a long-time avid fan of the New York Yankees and New England Patriots. However his true passion was fishing. Dennis is survived by two sons, Brian M. McQueeney and his wife, Nicole, of South Windsor, Jason M. McQueeney and his wife, Sara, of Manchester; a daughter, Joanna Jennings and her husband, Jo, of Virginia Beach, VA with whom he made his home; and six grandchildren, Julia Von Fecht, Kaitlyn McQueeney, Ethan McQueeney, Morgan McQueeney, Donly Jennings, and Hiller Jennings. He also leaves three sisters, Eileen McQueeney in East Hartford, Patricia Lee and her husband, Jeff, of West Hartford, Donna McQueeney of South Windsor; many close family and dear friends. Dennis's family would welcome any pictures or images of him that anyone would like to bring to the funeral home chapel on Thursday evening to be placed on a collage board.
Funeral Services will be Friday (May 25th) at 10:30 a.m. at the D'Esopo-East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford. Burial with military and police honors will follow at Hillside Cemetery, East Hartford. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home chapel on Thursday (May 24th) from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Dennis's name may be made to the , 2080 Silas Deane Hwy, 2nd Floor, Rocky Hill, CT 06067 or to the East Hartford Patrolman & Fireman Association, c/o 93 Dower Road, South Windsor, CT 06074.
