MORCOM, William Moore
William Moore Morcom, of West Hartford, beloved husband for 62 years of Betty M. Morcom, died peacefully on Thursday, (May 31, 2012) at the age of 91. Bill was a graduate of Kingswood School, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from Princeton University. His was the first Princeton class to be graduated early to release men to serve in World War II, where he was a First Lieutenant in the Army Air Force. His pride in serving his country was second only to pride in his family. His long career as a mechanical engineer began at Pratt and Whitney, and retired many years later from the Spencer Turbine Company. His career as a mechanical engineer reflected his commitment to high standards and a strong work ethic. Bill was a lifelong resident of West Hartford; son of Clifford B. Morcom and Hazel (Moore) Morcom. In 1950, he married Betty and together they raised three treasured children, Gwyn (John Anthony) Charles, William (Victoria) Morcom Jr., and Elizabeth (Thomas) Morcom-Kenney. He was a loving grandfather to Katharyn, Joseph, and Elisabeth. He was grateful for his lifelong friends including his sister-in-law, Joan Morcom, and several nieces and nephews. He enjoyed driving, reading, playing golf, building ship models, taking walks, the sounds of engines, and was a whiz at Crossword puzzles. He was a member of Asylum Hill Congregational Church and the West Harford Squires. Bill was a docent at the New England Air Museum for many years. He was recently promoted to Captain of the Tri-State Detective Agency. He is pre-deceased by his parents and brothers Clifford B. (Hazel) Morcom Jr. and Richard E. Morcom.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the Asylum Hill Congregational Church, 814 Asylum Ave., Hartford. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested in Bill's name to the New England Air Museum, Bradley International Airport, Windsor Locks, CT 06096.
