Ellen Teresa BARBER Obituary

BARBER, Ellen Teresa

It is with profound sadness that the family of Ellen Teresa (O'Keefe) Barber announces her passing on December 26, 2012 at Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Ellen was born to Eleanore and the late Matthew O'Keefe. She was born and raised "as daddy's little girl" in Scranton, PA and attended Marywood College where she received her teaching degree. Ellen taught in several states, including her first in New York, where she met her beloved husband and best friend of 46 years William Barber, before moving to South Windsor where she lived for over 33 years. Before retiring from St. Gabriel's School in Windsor, Ellen was a passionate teacher who touched countless lives in her nearly 50 years of teaching. In 1999, Ellen was awarded the Connecticut Catholic School Teacher of the Year for which she was nominated by staff and students. The love she felt for her students was evident in the many stories she shared with her family. Ellen's most cherished time was spent with her family and friends: singing and dancing to Irish music, going to UConn women basketball games, playing bridge, hosting Christmas Eve dinners, vacationing in Florida, going to the movies, and playing with her grandchildren. Her infectious joy for life and fun will be greatly missed by those who loved her so dearly. Ellen is survived by her devoted husband William Barber; her son Stephen Barber of St. Louis, MO; her daughters Lynne Calabro and her husband Kenneth of South Windsor, Julie Weiss and her husband Jeremy of Cromwell, and Kelley Cohen and her husband Glenn of Marlborough; her greatest "joy": grandchildren Nicole Calabro and Jack and Ben Weiss; her mother Eleanore O'Keefe of Scranton, PA; her brother and sister-in-law Kevin and Joanne O'Keefe of St. Louis, MO; and many, many friends. She was predeceased by her adored father Matthew O'Keefe.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Margaret Mary Church, 80 Hayes Road, South Windsor. Burial will be private. Her family will receive friends, Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor. Memorial donations may be made to Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center HR 5th Floor, 633 3rd Avenue, New York, NY 10017. For online expressions of sympathy, please visit us at www.carmonfuneralhome.com.
