Ernest Joseph CALACI Obituary

CALACI, Ernest Joseph

Ernest (Ernie) Joseph Calaci, 67, passed away on Monday, (February 18, 2013) at Matthews Presbyterian Hospital in Matthews, NC. Ernie was born Dec. 31, 1945 in Hartford, Connecticut, the son of Joseph and Christine (Franco) Calaci. He was raised in Hartford and attended school there until the family moved to Vernon in 1955. He went through the Vernon school system and attended Rockville High School until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1964. Ernie served in the U.S. Navy from 1964 to 1968, serving in Vietnam aboard the USS Boston (CAG-1) attaining the rank of Gunner's Mate Seaman and helping the USS Boston earn the Battle "E". He truly enjoyed his time in the Navy and serving his country, and got to "see the world" that was promised at his enlistment. Ernie was always active in sports, and while in the Navy, he was the starting shortstop for the All-Navy fast pitch softball team for two years. He played baseball for the Vernon Orioles in the Hartford Twilight League and then played many years on numerous slo pitch softball tournament teams where he earned the nickname from his teammates as "The Big E". He was an avid golfer and a fan of the New York Yankees and Oakland Raiders. One of his greatest joys was talking baseball and coaching his sons on how to play the game. He also enjoyed fly fishing with his father and brothers and later on with his own sons. Ernie worked in construction for many years and home health care before graduating Culinary Arts School in 1990 and becoming a chef, which is where his true passion lie. Ernie's family was the light of his life and the dinner table was always filled with good food and fun, especially during the holidays. Near the end of his life, Ernie was blessed with the arrival of his granddaughter Alyssa and cherished every moment of the two years that they had together. His playful spirit and laughter will be missed by all that knew him. Ernie is survived by his mother, Christine Calaci of Vernon; three sons, Casey Calaci of Mint Hill, NC, Michael (Cameron) Calaci of Dade City, FL, and Cody Calaci of Mint Hill, NC; granddaughter, Alyssa Calaci of Mint Hill, NC; brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael and Judy Calaci of Coventry, and Joseph and Teresa Calaci Jr. of Vernon; and nephew, Christopher Calaci of Vernon; he is also survived by the mother of his three children, Kathleen Blauvelt of Tolland. He was predeceased by his father, Joseph Calaci; and sister, Jo-Ann Calaci.
Burial will be at the discretion of the family.
