She was born on September 30, 1943 and was the daughter of the late Sonya and Herman Cheren of Albany, NY. Jean, as she was known, was predeceased by her loving husband of 38 years, Dr. Myron "Mo" Hurwitz; she was the devoted mother of the late Kimberly Awao of Sapporo, Japan, Jeffrey Hurwitz M.D. of Frederick, MD and Susan Callison of West Hartford; she was the adoring grandmother of Sayaka Awao, Madeline and Alexandra Hurwitz, and Cole and Hannah Callison ;she will be lovingly remembered by her children-in-law, Caroline Gessert-Hurwitz and Takeshi Awao; as well as by her brother and sister-in-law, Herb and Arleen Zuckerman. She also leaves behind her loving friend and close companion Philip Allmendinger M.D. of Farmington. Jean was a loved and well-respected Clinical Psychologist/Psychoanalyst in the Hartford area who touched many lives with her unique gift for understanding and helping others. She will be greatly missed. Jean was a graduate of Albany Medical School of Nursing and received her Bachelor's degree from the University of Hartford. She held a Master's degree in clinical social work from Smith College, in Amherst, MA, and studied for many years at the Berkshire Psychoanalytic Institute in Stockbridge, MA. Her love for animals and dedication to wildlife gave her much joy throughout life. She always made sure the animals and birds that lived behind her home were well fed and tended to. We who knew Jean will miss her very much. She was someone you could always rely on. Although she is gone, her wisdom and love will be carried on in our hearts. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Dr. Robert Siegel, Laurie Veale, R.N. and the dedicated staff of the Helen and Harry Gray Cancer Center at Hartford Hospital for their tender care of Jean over these many years.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Helen and Harry Gray Cancer Center at Hartford Hospital, 80 Seymour Street, P.O. Box 5037 Hartford, CT 06102, so others may fight for another day.
