KNOWLES, William E.

William E. Knowles 92, of West Hartford, died March 13, 2013 at home. He was the loving husband of the late Elizabeth (Dettenborn) Knowles. He was born August 15, 1920 in Mansfield, MA. He was the son of the late Grace (Sylvester) and Benjamin Knowles. William was a retired Animal Control Officer for the town of West Hartford for 23 years. He had a compassion for all animals, especially for his longtime companion, his dog Abbey. William was also a Navy veteran of World War II, where he served this country in the Atlantic, Pacific and Asiatic Theaters. He was a former member of the American Legion Post 96, of West Hartford. He was a 32nd degree mason for over 50 years, presently a member of Wyllys St John Lodge#99 in West Hartford. He was also a member of Sphinx Temple A.A.0.W. of Newington. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved his cabin in Maine where he enjoyed fishing and hunting with his wife and family, and sharing his knowledge of the outdoors with his grandchildren. He was a special dad to his son William Mark Knowles, of Broad Brook; and his two stepdaughters Donna S. Hollinshead (Hugh) of West Hartford, Cynthia S. Daigle (Mario) of West Hartford. He also leaves his grandchildren Joseph Hollinshead (Samantha), Dallas, TX, Krista Hollinshead of West Hartford, Mark Daigle (Amy) of West Hartford, Michael Daigle (Emily) of Glastonbury and four great-grandchildren Ruby Hollinshead, Anna and Wyatt Daigle and William Daigle. Besides his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his grandson Christopher Knowles, daughter-in-law Lori Knowles and 11 siblings. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Pastor Dana Hallenbeck will preside at the private graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mr. Knowles name to the charity of donor's choice. Online expressions of sympathy may be made at www.molloyfuneralhome.com.
