MAZZA, Thomas J., Jr.
Heaven became a brighter place and earth much dimmer with the passing of Thomas J. Mazza, Jr., 81, of South Windsor, on Friday, March 22, 2013, at his home with his loving wife Teresa (Perrone) Mazza and his family at his side. Born in New York City, New York, the son of the late Thomas and Frances (O'Hare) Mazza, he lived in Manhattan, Chicago, Philadelphia and Harrison, NY before moving to South Windsor over forty-six years ago. He was a graduate of LaSalle High School in Philadelphia and LaSalle University, Class of 1953 where he was a member of the crew team. He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War where he served in the 711th Airborne Ordnance Battalion of the 11th Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, KY. Tom worked in the purchasing department at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft for 32 years and retired in 1993 as the manager of Procurement Operations Analysis and Control. He was an active parishioner of St. Margaret Mary Church in South Windsor, where he was a Eucharistic minister, past president and member of the parish council and taught CCD for over 15 years and the confirmation program for six years. Tom was a fourth Degree Knight and past Grand Knight of K of C Council 5779. He was very involved in town civic affairs. He was the chairperson of the Post Office Committee and was involved in the Parents Clubs in the South Windsor Schools and East Catholic High School, and was also instrumental in starting Boy Scout Troop 886. He was a volunteer for several years at St. Francis Hospital, CT Children's Medical Center, and he was a driver for F.I.S.H. Tom enjoyed his second home in Vermont with his family and traveling extensively with his wife. In addition to his wife of over 53years, Tom is survived by his son and friend, Thomas Mazza, III, and his wife Angelica of Manchester, and loving daughters, Mary Frances McGeary and her husband Tom of Bolton, and Karen Tata and her husband Paul of Thompson; six grandchildren, Meaghan, Maria and Maggie McGeary and Jason, Danielle and Kevin Tata; a sister-in-law, Angela Diener and her husband Herbert of Austin, TX and their children, John and Maryteresa, and also many dear cousins. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. His kindness, generosity and helpfulness to others was never ending. Tom was truly a giving person to everyone he knew. Tom reached out to so many, he was loved and admired by all and we will miss him dearly. Thank you to all who provided Tom with compassionate care through these last years.
His family will receive friends for calling hours on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 from 4 - 8 p.m. at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor. Family and friends may gather at the funeral home on Wednesday, March 27 at 9 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM at Saint Margaret Mary Church, 80 Hayes Road, South Windsor. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford, with military honors.
