SMITH, Stephen Ashley
Stephen Ashley Smith of Manchester, beloved husband, father, "Opa," and friend, died Saturday, (April 6, 2013) after a brief illness. Born April 4, 1942 in Abington, PA, he was the son of Frederick Ashley and Alice Wanner Smith. He was graduated from Penn State University in 1964, and was employed at General Electric, Hamilton Standard, Hamilton Test Systems, and Pratt & Whitney for 33 years as a Project Engineer. He was also self-employed for 12 years as a Marine Surveyor and the proprietor of Sound Survey. Steve enjoyed sailing the waters of Long Island Sound, around the Cape and Islands, and along the coast of Maine, and he remembered with special joy taking his sloop Alskare to Bermuda in 1980, using only celestial navigation to guide him. A member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Hartford, he served as a member of the Vestry, a Confirmation Mentor, a member of the Book Group, co-chair of the Annual Appeal, and a member of the Trinity Singers. Steve's honesty, integrity, humility, and playful spirit made him a joy to know, and he had a host of friends who loved him and relied on his steady presence. He is grieved and deeply missed by his wife, Martha Freimuth of Manchester, his daughter, Christine Smith Mulford of Saratoga Springs, NY, his son, David Smith of Middletown, his granddaughters Megan and Maya Mulford and his grandsons Aidan and Zachary Smith, his brother and sister-in-law Jeffry and Barbara Smith of Buck Hill Falls, PA, three special nieces and their families, and his former wife Virginia Stacy of Fort Myers, FL.
