DUFFY, Joseph M.

Joseph M. Duffy, 87, of Bristol, passed away peacefully, Wednesday morning, April 24, 2013. He is survived by his wife Mary (Bachman) with whom he celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2012. Joe was born on Thursday, July 2, 1925, in Concord, New Hampshire, a son of the late John and Winifred (Halligan) Duffy. He graduated from St. John High School in Concord, NH, entered the United States Army and was stationed in Europe during World War II. Upon returning to the United States Joe graduated from the University of New Hampshire in Durham using the GI Bill. He was employed at New Departure-Hyatt, a division of General Motors, in Bristol for 40 years until his retirement. Joe and his wife were founding members of St. Gregory Catholic Church. He loved history, travel and gardening, and was a friend to all he met. Joe was a devoted brother, husband, father and grandfather and is also survived by three children, a son, Stephen and his wife, Kathy Burness of Bristol; two daughters, Maureen McCarthy and her husband Francis of North Branford and Sheila Duffy of Arlington, VA; a brother, Edward Duffy and his wife Yvette of Fairfax, VA; a sister, Dorothy Hybsch and her husband Jack of Hooksett, NH; six grandchildren, Stephen L. Duffy, Ryan A. Duffy, Brendan McCarthy, Patrick McCarthy, Caitlin McCarthy and Meghan McCarthy; and several nieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by his granddaughter, Bridget Frances McCarthy. A special thanks to the neurology department and medical and nursing teams at St Francis Hospital and Medical Center, Hartford, the Emergency Room staff at Bristol Hospital and the entire staff at Sheriden Woods, Bristol for his exemplary care.
Calling hours will begin on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 12 Noon at The O'Brien Funeral Home, 24 Lincoln Ave., Forestville/Bristol until the funeral procession leaves for St Gregory Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:30 p.m. Military honors will be bestowed immediately following the Mass.
