Dudley H. MANCHESTER Jr. Obituary

MANCHESTER, Dudley H., Jr.

Dudley H. Manchester, Jr., of West Hartford, passed away on Friday (August 9, 2013) just short of his 88th birthday. He died at home surrounded by his wife of 55 years, Arlene, and his children Anne, Haley, and Courtney. He was born in Winsted, CT, and was the son of Dudley H. Manchester and Esther (Reed) Manchester. He attended the Gilbert School, and went on to graduate from Wesleyan University where he was a member of the Honors College. He received his BA and MA from Wesleyan, and a second MA of English from the U. of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He was a voracious reader and always had his books nearby. An avid outdoorsman, Dudley particularly loved hiking with his dog, bicycling, and going to South Bristol, Maine, in the summer. He wrote poetry throughout his life, and could spend hours capturing nature with his old Rolleiflex camera. His other interests included kayaking, canoeing, cross-country skiing, playing chess, target shooting, fencing, and bee keeping. He truly enjoyed teaching English, and spent 34 years doing just that at HPHS, retiring in 1991. He loved his inner-city students. He also taught at SUNY College in NY and in Michigan. In addition to his family mentioned above, he is survived by his daughter-in-law, Van, his grandchildren Kimberly and Khoi, and his sister Ann Shubert of Acton, MA. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Lois Harpole of Pasadena, CA, and his sister Carole Pillay of NYC.
There will be a service and scattering of his ashes at a time to be determined by the family. Donations may be made in his memory to any animal or wildlife charity, or to any charity of your choosing. Online expressions of condolences may be made at www.molloyfuneralhome.com
