Edward F. BURNS Obituary

BURNS, Edward F.

Edward F. Burns, 89, of Newington, passed away Thursday (October 24, 2013), at Saint Mary Home in West Hartford. Born in Hartford on November 12, 1923, he was the son of the late Joseph J. Burns and Irene E. (Ahern) Burns and the beloved husband of Gloria M. (Vandrilla) Burns for 52 years. Edward's quest for knowledge was ongoing and insatiable. He first learned to read at age 4 and found his passion in books and delighted in reading. As a young child, Edward was intrigued with airplanes and flight; both of which fascinated him with their complexity. After Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps during which time he served as a Flight Engineer. Upon completion of his service, he graduated from Brown University in Providence, RI to pursue a lifelong career as a Mechanical Engineer. He retired from Raymond Engineering in 1989. Edward's retirement afforded him to enjoy a longstanding charm with trains as he and his wife, Gloria, shared the pleasure of many train journeys together. They also enjoyed traveling abroad to Germany, Switzerland and Italy. But it was their two trips to Italy that truly enthralled them. Edward was a devoted father whose firm strength and love is treasured by his son and four daughters: Ronald Burns, of Glastonbury; Susan Burns and her husband Rob Huestis of Glastonbury; Barbara Burns of Mansfield; Andie Mackey and her husband Ted Mackey, of Cheshire and Kathleen Meade and her husband Steve Meade of Enfield; his brothers and sister: J. William Burns, Raymond Burns and Jane Marie Hurley. Edward is also survived by his four grandchildren: Colleen Schmelter, Bryan Burns, Meghan Woods, Nate Mackey and two great-grandchildren: Cameron and Erin Schmelter as well as his dearest, lifelong friend, Theodora Barbadoro. Edward was predeceased by a brother and two sisters: Joseph J. Burns, Rita Irene Thiery and Patricia Eileen Everin. Edward was a man of great dignity who held to his ideals and took pride in living a good life.
