Thomas J. D'Amore Jr. Obituary


Thomas J. D'Amore, Jr. passed away suddenly on January 7, 2014 at his New Hartford home. The eldest son of Thomas J. D'Amore, Sr. and Josephine Marie Bazzano D'Amore, Tom was born in Winsted, Connecticut on January 26, 1941. He attended St. Anthony Grammar School, Gilbert High School, The University of Hartford and the University of Connecticut. In 1992, he was selected as a Fellow at the Institute of Politics, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. Tom left his family's real estate and insurance business in 1970 to join the gubernatorial campaign of then Congressman Thomas J. Meskill. Following Meskill's victory, Tom served in a number of senior government posts. He was an original member of a youthful group of Meskill staffers, dubbed by the media "The Kiddie Korps". Tom continued his political involvement and was named manager of Senator Lowell P. Weicker's 1982 re-election campaign. He subsequently was elected Connecticut State Republican Chairman and later served as Campaign Chairman for Weicker's successful run for Governor in 1990. Tom was named Governor Weicker's Chief of Staff in 1991 and later taught at Harvard's Institute of Politics. For the past two decades, Tom was a partner in the Hartford-based government relations and political consulting firm, Doyle, D'Amore and Balducci. Tom is survived by his mother Josephine Marie Bazanno and pre-deceased by his father Thomas J. D'Amore, Sr. of Winsted, CT. He is predeceased by his sister Carmella O'Connor of Newington and is survived by his brother David A. D'Amore, Sr. and his wife Patricia of New Hartford; as well as sisters Lucille Hogan and her husband Thomas of North Haven, and Antoinette Centrella and her husband Phillip of Winsted. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Culley D'Amore and her two children Jonathan Miller and Deanna Meservey. He is also survived by his four children Deirdre Moutinho, Karen D'Amore, Cecile D'Amore and Thomas J. D'Amore, Ill, their mother Mary Lu Higgins, 7 grandchildren, and many neices and nephews. He leaves behind many close friends, business associates, and long-time companion Linda Delande. A funeral mass will be held for Tom at St. Joseph Church, Main St., Winsted, CT at 11:00 am Monday, January 13. Contributions in Tom's memory may be made to St. Anthony's School, Winsted, CT. or to The Lucia and Mason Beekley Community Library, New Hartford, CT.
