Anthony J. LaPenta Jr. Obituary

Anthony J. "Muskie" LaPenta, Jr., 89, of Newington, beloved husband for 59 years of Michelina (Paesano) LaPenta, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Thursday (January 9, 2014). Born in Hartford on December 12, 1924, he was the son of the late Anthony J. and Mary (Cataldi) LaPenta. As a child, he loved working with his father at a newsstand on Main Street in Hartford. Anthony was a proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving during WWII. He owned and operated the Walk-Inn Restaurant on Broad Street in Hartford for 26 years and LaPenta's Casa Loma in Kensington. He later worked at the VA Hospital in Newington. Cooking is what made him happiest and he always helped the hungry and unfortunate, feeding many at his restaurants and including them in family holiday dinners. He donated yearly to Boys Town and to St. Jude Children's Hospital. However, the most important thing in Anthony's life was being with his family, who meant everything to him. In addition to his devoted wife "Mickey," he will be dearly missed by his five children, Michele and partner Rob, Sylvia and her husband Edward Lallier, Anthony and his wife Jennifer, Andrew and Mei and Diane and Parker; five adored grandchildren, Anthony and his partner Lisa, Ed Lallier, Danny Lallier and his wife Raechel, Joey Lallier and Lisa, Shannon and Tyler; seven special great-grandchildren, Kylie, Kaeleigh, Emma, Nathan, Aubrey, Olivia and Daniel; his siblings, Danny LaPenta, Lenny LaPenta and his partner Bridget, Joe LaPenta and his wife Marie and Rosemarie and her fiancé Russell, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, George and Richard; his sister, Iva and his sister-in-law, Sue. Special thanks to the St. Francis Hospital ICU staff for the care and compassion shown to Anthony and his family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Augustine Church, 10 Campfield Ave., Hartford. Everyone is invited to go directly to the church. Burial with military honors will follow in Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Calling hours will be on Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at the D'Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield. Donations in Anthony's memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 100, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38101-9908.
