Dr.  William N. GOODWIN Obituary


Dr. William Noel Goodwin [Dr. Bill], retired Director of Counseling Service of the Metropolitan Hartford, YMCA passed away peacefully Tuesday, (March 18, 2014). He was born December 29, 1921 to parents Frederick and Anne (Clarke) Goodwin, in county Donegal, Ireland. Bill and his parents immigrated to the United States when he was 18 months old and settled in the Greater Boston area. Bill earned his Bachelor of Science degree and Master of Science degree in Counseling from Springfield College. His subsequent academic achievements included work on his Ph.D. at Columbia University with completion of his Ph.D. in counseling from the University of Connecticut. As many young men of his generation, Bill responded to the demands of WWII. He served in the U.S. Air Corps in the European theater and was awarded the Air Medal with six bronze stars. After the war, his professional life began with the YMCA in New York City and he spent most of his career with the YMCA, Hartford as the Director of the Counseling Service with a four year hiatus as a member of the Human Relations staff at World Headquarters of Stanley Works. He retired in 1986 and spent winters in Ft. Myers, FL. Dr. Goodwin's beloved wife, Charlotte Marguerite [Harsh], pre-deceased him March 17, 1988. He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him for his kind, loving nature. He leaves his beloved children, Charlotte Sullivan and her husband Philip, of Newington, Deborah Goodwin of Ft Myers, Florida and Richard Goodwin and his wife Lynne of Newington; three beloved grandchildren, Victoria Parkerson, Rick Goodwin and Gregory Goodwin and two great grandchildren Amanda Jovino and Ryan Jovino. He also leaves his brother Frederick Goodwin and his wife Miriam and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of Bill's life will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, 124 Maple Hill Ave, Newington at 12:00 noon on Monday, March 24, 2014. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made directly to the Hartford YMCA, 241 Trumbull Street, Hartford, CT 06103.
