John N. Drost Obituary

John N. Drost, 88, of Windsor, beloved husband of almost 69 years of Mary (Kalukiewicz) Drost, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 30, 2014 at St. Francis Hospital. Born in Norwood, MA to the late Vincent William and Felicja (Berkowski) Drozd, he first met his wife Mary at the age of 9 and pitched for Norwood's State Championship baseball team. John served his country proudly with the US Army Air Corps during WWII and after the war he got married and together they settled in Windsor. He was a member of St. Gabriel Church in Windsor and was a very active member. John worked as an underwriter for Aetna for over 39 years and was a very civic minded man, serving the Town of Windsor as a Selectman and town constable. He was also a volunteer with Foodshare, and regularly donated blood to the Red Cross earning a spot in the 100 Gallon Club. In his spare time John loved to collect political memorabilia and stamps. He will be dearly missed for his contributions to his town and community and his quirky sense of humor. Besides his wife Mary, he is survived by his daughters Susan Hoffman and her husband Daniel of West Palm Beach, FL and Deborah Gantt and her husband Michael of West Granby; his grandchildren Abigail and Michael J. Gantt, and James and Jennifer Cullins; and his nephew John Drost; and a special cousin Jennie Ambruskevich, "Yanya", who introduced John and his sweetheart when they were children. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his son Stephen Drost, his brother Stanley Drost, Sr. and his nephew Stanley Drost, Jr. The family would like to thank the entire staff of Suffield House, Suffield By The River and River's Watch, Dr. Patrick Corcoran and the staff of 9-9 and 8-1 at St. Francis Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM Saturday, April 5 at St. Gabriel Church, 379 Broad St. Windsor followed by burial with military honors in Windsor Veterans Memorial Cemetery. His family will receive friends prior to the service on Saturday from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave Windsor. In lieu of flowers please make memorial donations in John's name to the American Red Cross, PO Box 4002018, Des Moines, IA 50340-2018 or to Foodshare, 450 Woodland Ave, Bloomfield, CT 06002.
