Nancy Anderson Antonez, a longtime resident of West Hartford, entered peacefully into eternal rest on Thursday, May 8, 2014. She was born January 3, 1928, to the late Joseph E. and J. Mildred (Anderson) Anderson, in Waterbury, CT. After graduating from Washington High School in Washington, CT, Nancy attended UConn for two years then transferred to and graduated from Central Connecticut State College with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. She obtained her Master's Degree in Reading and Language Arts from the University of Hartford. She first taught school in Norwalk, CT then moved to West Hartford where she continued to teach in the Smith, King Philip, Whitman and Braeburn Schools for the next 20 years. She then embarked on a new phase of her career as a reading teacher with the Intensive Reading Instructional Team (IRIT) and spent the next 20 years working with students with specific needs. The IRIT program was citied by the U.S. Office of Education as one of top ten model reading programs in the country. Nancy met her wonderful husband Peter Antonez while teaching in Norwalk and they married on June 28, 1952, and his work moved them to West Hartford. As a couple, they were fortunate to have traveled the world; trips to Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Egypt, Sweden, to name a few, and also enjoyed their summer home at Cape Cod where they always entertained friends and family every summer. They were famous for their July 4th barbeques at the Cape. Nancy was a fabulous cook and baker and no one could outdo her at any holiday feast. Their home was the gathering place where the family would come together and always feel welcome. Nancy was a member of the First Church of Christ Congregational, West Hartford, CT, where she has been a very active member for 59 years serving on many committees. She had great faith and loved the Lord and her Church. She was also very active in her community; volunteered with the Salvation Army, Meals on Wheels, Loaves and Fishes; also a member of the West Hartford Belles and a Sixty-Seven Year Member of the Delta Zeta Sorority Gamma Beta Chapter.
