Cleveland Reid Obituary



Cleveland Samuel Reid nicknamed "Brownie" was born to the late Noel Reid and Emily Braham in Lucky Hill, Saint Mary, Jamaica, W.I. September 30, 1917 and went to sleep March 15, 2015.Cleveland migrated to the United States in 1943 as a tobacco laborer. He held several jobs, working tirelessly to support his family, and finally retired from employment with the Hartford Board of Education in 1985. Cleveland was an active and devout player and teacher of dominos. He loved to garden and spent countless hours growing vegetables and beans. His favorite crop to harvest was "red peas". Cleveland was a founding member of the West Indian Social Club. He also served since the 1960s as a beloved and committed lifetime member of the Independent United Order of Mechanics - Utopia Lodge #5. As a member of the Lodge, he achieved four degrees: Sir Knight, Past Illustrative Grand, Apprentice and Masters.Cleveland is survived by his four children - Cherie R. Reid (Dee Dee); Joy Henry Hinton (Andrew); Nicole Reid Johnson (Reginald); Michael Reid (Tiffany); Brother - Youckal Riley; Seven Grandchildren, Four Great grandchildren and a host of other family and friends. He is predeceased by his loving wife Retina C. Reid (July 22, 1996), Siblings - Florence Reid, Mary Nicholson, Theodore Riley and Two Grandchildren.The funeral service will be held on Monday, March 23, 2015 at Faith Seventh-day Adventist Church, 500 Woodland Street, Hartford, CT.
