Juan Fuentes Vizcarrondo, 83, of Hartford, CT, beloved husband of Lucretia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 16, 2015. He was born in Humacao, Puerto Rico and was a US Army veteran, serving during the Korean War, stationed in San Francisco, CA. He came to Hartford in 1965 by way of New York City. Juan was a journalist and photographer who began his work with a weekly column in Spanish for The Hartford Times before working for The Hartford Star. He also submitted articles and photographs of local events to community newspapers such as The Northend Agent's and The Hartford News. He was artist-in-residence for the San Juan Center-Quirk Middle School Photography workshop and taught photography to Spanish-speaking senior citizens at the Golden Age Center. His photographic work has been widely exhibited locally, nationally and in Puerto Rico. He won several professional awards and has been featured on CPTV's Hartford Moments. The Hartford Courant Northeast Magazine recognized him as a CT Bloomer in 1997. Juan was extremely proud of his six daughters and one son and is survived by 18 grandchildren as well as a host of loving cousins, great grandchildren and friends. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, September 25, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Phillips Metropolitan CME Church, 2500 Main Street in Hartford. A special thank you to the staff at Saint Francis Hospital and Park Place Health Center. Mi querido compadre, you will always hold a special place in my heart. I learned to love and appreciate you through the many years we spent working long days and nights on La Prensa Grafica and El Observador and, the many battles we fought for our community. You were a devoted husband and father. Thank you for sharing your family with me, you were the only family I had in Hartford for many years. Thank you for the laughs we shared and for always reminding us of our proud heritage. You are missed. Hope to run into you in heaven someday. Tu compay, Calixto.

It is truly a legacy that Juan has left behind. And i hope that it will lift your grief. When I met Juan and found out that he was a neighbor of Ana Haddock Pena, my aunt, I realized how we are touched by those we are lead to meet in our lives. Then, I saw him everywhere and every time I saw him I felt close to home. Love and bless all of you.

To the Fuentes Family and close friends: My deepest condolences upon the passing of my dear friend Juan Fuentes.

I will always remember him as a dedicated leader and mentor.

Part of the growth of the Greater Hartford Latino community is owed in part to Juan's dedication and unselfish giving of himself.

Lucy and family, please take heart in knowing that Juan is probably in a better place.

I will miss him dearly.

I have known and admired Juan since long ago he helped the Hartford Times reach out to a new constituency with a weekly column -- and have appreciated over the ensuing years his growth as a journalist, photographer and community activist, a Blue Hills neighbor and valued friend.
I join in mourning his loss, but also in celebrating the life and contributions of a wonderful human being.

My condolences to the family of Juan Fuentes. I knew Juan Fuentes all of my life, and I have fond memories of him spending time in my parents home during the sixties and later on in life. I also have great memories of dancing with him, as he was a excellent dancer. I pray that he rests in the loving arms of God.
