David Trenholm Obituary

David Ross Trenholm, 89, died peacefully at home in Simsbury on October 21, after a short illness. A 53-year resident of East Granby, he was beloved by his family: wife Virginia, daughter Emily, and son-in-law Les Edwards. David was born in 1925 in Cambridge, MA and grew up in Lexington, MA. He was the son of the late John D. and Bertha M.Trenholm, and the brother of the late Peter Trenholm. He was a graduate of Yale University. He served in the U.S. Navy and was in active duty during both World War II and the Korean Conflict. Subsequently he spent many years in the Naval Reserves, retiring in 1971 at the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He moved to the Hartford area in 1954 and spent his business career in the Group Pension department at Connecticut General Life Insurance Company, later CIGNA. He retired in 1987 as an officer of the company. In East Granby, David served on the school board and was active in other community organizations. He and his wife established a book endowment fund to benefit the East Granby Public Library. A longtime music lover and record collector, David's tastes were quite eclectic, ranging from classical to Broadway to punk rock. He also enjoyed reading, the theater, movies, art musuems, and good food and wine. Survivors also include nephews Shaun Trenholm of Lawrence, KS and Derek Trenholm of St. Maries, ID; and niece Sheila Trenholm Schaffer of Norwalk, OH. Also, James and Judy Agnew, David's brother- and sister-in-law, of Durham, NC, and three nieces: Lynn Agnew Ross of Atlanta, GA; Laura Agnew of Durham, NC; and Lisa Agnew Ben-Meir of Rye, NY. The family appreciates the staffs of McLean Home Care and Hospice and Bright Star of Hartford, who provided care and support during David's illness. Calling hours will be Saturday, October 24, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the East Granby Library Association Book Endowment Fund, c/o Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, 10 Columbus Boulevard, 8th floor, Hartford, CT 06106 or to a public library of the donor's choice. David was a good friend from my days at CG and most recently our many lunches together at Metro Bis...his favorite spot. He always wanted me to bring my sports car to ride to and from the restaurant. David was an excellent listener and we enjoyed our family stories. I will greatly miss David and our get-togethers.

My condolences to Emily and Virginia. David was such a lovely person. Brilliant but always down to earth, and unfailingly polite. There was much to admire about him, but what I appreciated most was how he treated me like a grown-up even when I was just a kid.

I am sorry to hear of Dave's passing. Dave was my first boss at CG when I was hired in 1974. I learned a lot from him, not just about the business, but about how to be a fine person. My thoughts and prayer are with the family.
