John L. (Pinkey) Bounds, Jr.
John Lidnsey (Pinkey) Bounds, Jr. was born in Hattiesburg, MS on July 26, 1924. He passed away on March 10, 2014.
Mr. Bounds was drafted into the U.S. Army
in 1942 at the age of 18. Following basic training, he shipped over seas and was assigned to the 749 Tank BN as an inside gunner. He served in the European Theater through England, France, Belgium and Germany. During World War II
, the 749 Tank BN held Pentagon records for 196 days of continuous fighting (combat); 2200 total miles covered and 17 units served with. The battalion served with General George Patton at the Battle of the Bulge, protecting his left flank.
Following the end of the war, (after his discharge), Mr. Bounds enrolled at Mississippi Southern College (now USM). He was a charter member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity when it was established on campus. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars

For his entire working career, Mr. Bounds worked for W.P. (Smokie) Harrington-first as a teen in Mr. Harrington's restaurant and later as manager of Smokies Sporting Goods for over 42 years. He resided with the Harringtons for a number of years and Smokie, his wife, Lana, their 3 sons, Pat, Larry and Mickey became like family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Aline Bounds and a brother, Joe.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Elizabeth Doherty Bounds of Hattiesburg; one daughter, Linda Keng (Randy) and son, Marty Bounds all of Jackson; three step-children, five step-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the U.S.M. Athletic Foundation.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 PM Wednesday at Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home and beginning at 10:00 AM Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Interment will be in Highland Cemetery.
