Martha Joyce Thornton Smith

Martha Thornton Smith

formerly of Hattiesburg

Martha Joyce Thornton Smith passed away on August 3, 2013 at age 88, in North Carolina. She was born and raised in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, but her marriage to an Army officer, James H. Smith (Jim), her sense of adventure and compassion took her to other parts of the United States and other countries of the world.

She was a red head beauty with a radiant smile that took Jim's breath away when he first met her. They had five children and built a multitude of treasured memories as a family. When Jim died, Martha was 62 years old and she started down another life's passage as an enthusiastic Red Cross Volunteer. For many years she dedicated her time and energy to help those in need from ice storms in Northern Mississippi to sleeping on a wet mattress in the America Samoa Islands following a devastating Cyclone. Her compassion and interest in others made it easy for her to make and keep friends and garner love and respect from her family.

Martha is survived by her brother, Thomas Thornton, her children, Terry, Otis, Lynn, Stacy and Clay in addition to four grandchildren, three great grandchildren, two nephews and many friends.

Martha's life will be celebrated in her beloved Mississippi at the University Baptist Church in Hattiesburg on Saturday, August 17th at 2:00 pm, followed by a reception in the fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family request you donate in her memory to the South Mississippi Chapter of the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 1730, Hattiesburg, MS 39403.
