Mrs. Marvell Hoffman, 81, died Sun., May 20, 2012.
Marvell was born August 28, 1930, to Charlie and Inez Rankin in Rosedale. She was a lifelong resident of Mississippi.
She is survived by her sister, Lorene Lofton of Cleveland; her four children, Janice Thompson and Jerry Neal of Wiggins, Amy Neal-Wheeler of Indianola, Melissa (Rick) Gnau of Saucier; her longtime caregiver, Erica Malong; six grandchildren, Michael Thompson, Tracey Thompson (Danny) Medford, Brenda Harris, Rebecca Burchfield, Jessica Gnau (Jeff) Mouring and Rebecca Gnau; 16 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.
Her mother, father, three husbands, and one sister, Modean Bennett, preceded her in death.
In a time when mothers did not work, Marvell always worked from when she was a teenager until her 70's. She was a nurse, one of the first head start teachers, sold insurance and was a noted antique dealer. Other than family, she had three passions in life, antiques, animals and her flowers. She ran an antique mall in Hattiesburg for many years and she was also know throughout the sate for her great knowledge of antiques and was always eager to share her expertise. She was a master gardener. She was an avid animal lover all of her life and had many pets. She loved animals and they loved her.
Marvell was a very strong person and taught her children to respect all people, work hard, do the right thing, be honest, be strong and enjoy life. She had a great sense of humor and made friends easily. She enjoyed both the Senior Center and her last home at Azalea Gardens. Her friends will remember her generosity of spirit, her caring nature and her love of life.
A special note of gratitude goes to Dr. Charles Griffith of Purvis, who helped her and the family so much in her final days.
A memorial service will be held in her honor at 3 p.m., Sun., May 27 at Moore Funeral Home in Wiggins, with visitation from 2 to 3 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made in Marvell's to the Stone County SPCA, P.O. Box 129, Perkinston, MS 39573.
Moore Funeral Home in Wiggins is in charge of arrangements.

I am so saddened to hear of Marvell's passing,,,we shared many good times but lost touch when she moved to wiggings' but she was always in my heart and she always will be...love to you all.... cheta carroll

Janice, Jerry, Melissa and Amy. I am so sorry to hear of Marvell's passing. I have been looking for her for years but was unable to locate her. I am glad to see that her family was around her and I know she drew comfort from that. You all know that I loved her like a sister.
