Rev. Howard Thomas Lips, Sr.

New Augusta

Rev. Howard Thomas Lips, Sr., 92, of New Augusta, Ms. passed away in his sleep Saturday morning September 7, 2013 at the Hattiesburg, Ms. Forrest General Hospital. Born in Merchantville, New Jersey to Howard and Caroline Lips, he lived most of his life in Mississippi married to Catherine Pearl Walters Lips. She preceded him in death in May of 2002, after celebrating 59 years of marriage.

Howard, Sr. was a passionate man who loved God, his country, fishing, and reading. In his younger years, he was an avid football fan and Harley Davidson rider following in the tradition of his father Howard Swain Lips. He also enjoyed listening to talking book mystery stories, since he no longer could see to read.

Rev. Howard Thomas Lips, Sr. was a WWII hero who served under Patton and Eisenhower, was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal W/ Star, American Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII, Yellow Fever Lapel Button, and he was a Soldier of the Cross who served Jesus Christ for over 60 years.

Reverend Lips was an extremely caring father who loved his three sons, Howard Lips, Jr. and his wife Renee' of New Augusta, Ms., Dr. Mike Lips and his wife Earline of Brookhaven, Ms., and Don Lips and his wife Pam of Ocklawaha, Florida. He is also survived by his sister Viola and her husband Sid Dehann of Grand Rapids, Michigan, as well as his many loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and hundreds of church family.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday September 11, 2013 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Moore Funeral Home 1015 College Ave. E., Wiggins, Ms. Memorial donations may be made to the Methodist Children's Homes, Morrow Administrative Center, Post Office Box 66, Clinton, Mississippi 39060-0066, 601-853-5000, 601-853-5010 fax.

The family will again receive friends on Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. at Burton Memorial United Methodist Church 2419 22nd Ave, Gulfport, MS 39501. The service will be at 11:30 a.m., conducted by Rev. Dr. Willis Britt and Rev. Dr. Keith Tonkel. Music will be provided by Rev. Kelly Pope and singer-songwriter Brian Randle.

Graveside burial service will be conducted at the Highland Cemetery, Hattiesburg, Ms. at 2:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
