Mrs. Lela Roanoke Matthews, 94, departed this life to enter the kingdom of Heaven and a new body in Christ on Sun., Sept. 9, 2012 at the MS State Veterans Home in Collins. Visitation will be from 8:30 until 10 a.m., Wed., Sept. 12, 2012 at Moore Funeral Home in Hattiesburg. Services will immediately follow. Graveside services will be at 12:30 p.m. at Biloxi National Cemetery.
Mrs. Matthews served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a dietician and was the recipient of the American Theatre Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon. She taught elementary school at St. Martin in Ocean Springs, was a member of the D.A.R., Delta Kappa Gamma and Hardy Street Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. John Matthews; and two brothers, Paul Rogers and Jack Rogers.
She is survived by two sons, Bob (Patricia) Woods of Moss Point and Roy Woods of Ocean Springs; two sisters, Jackie Clark of Hattiesburg and Cleo Byrd of Mize; one brother, Lester Rogers of Glendale, Ariz.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews including a special niece, Jacquelyn Page.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to Hardy Street Baptist Church.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at MS State Veterans Home in Collins, Dr. Harprett Sood, Covington County Hospital staff and SouthernCare Hospice staff for their exceptional care.
