Robert Graham Walker, of Key West, FL, formerly of Petal, MS, passed away on February 26, 2013. He was born in Dallas, TX, on August 28, 1944. He graduated from Petal High School in 1963, and earned his undergraduate and postgraduate degree from Mississippi State University.
Robert retired as Superintendent of Monroe County Schools after over 30 years as an educator in the Florida Keys. He was the principal of Horace O' Bryant (HOB) Middle School, which was named as a National School of Excellence. The school leadership was honored at a reception with President Ronald Regan at the White House. Robert provided great leadership and enhanced the lives of many of Key West's youth.
His years of service to the Florida Keys community would continue when he became the Executive Director of AIDS Help, Int., in 2000. Robert has been a leader, director, and member of many organizations and clubs. He was a proud Rotarian and was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. The Rotary Club of Key West recently honored him with the Robert G. Walker Humanitarian Scholarship to be bestowed annually to an outstanding high school senior. The new library, as well as the Educational Center at Horace O'Bryant Middle School were named in his honor. The City of Key West proclaimed July 18th, 2012, as Robert G. Walker Day for his contributions to making the community a better place to live.
He was preceded in death by his father, F.M. "Scotty" Walker, two brothers, Scotty Walker and Toy Walker, and sister Candy Miller.
Robert is survived by his wife, Celia, their daughters Cierra Walker, of Beverly Hills, CA, Ginger Molina (Roberto), of Paducah, KY, Robin Reid, Jackson, MO, Dina Schoneck (John), LoriAnn Koehn, Gloria Straube (Andy), Lisette Niles (Jack III), all of Key West, FL, his mother, Lillian Walker, of Petal, one sister, Tissie Talley (Ron), of Eclectic, AL, and one brother, Randy Walker, of Pass Christian, MS.
Visitation will be held 5:30 - 8:30 PM at Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home in Hattiesburg, Monday, March 4th. His funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, March 5th at the funeral home. A Celebration of Life in Mr. Walker's honor will be held in Key West at a later date.
