Roderick Douglas Woods

Hattiesburg, MS

Roderick Douglas Woods, age 83, graduated from Hattiesburg High School in 1946 and from USM in 1952, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity and the business fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi. He joined the Marine Corps in 1946 and served two years immediately after graduating high school. In 1948 Mr. Woods was released from the Marine Corps and immediately re-enlisted in the Reserves. He served on active duty for a total of four years and in the Reserves for 38 years and then retired as a Major.

After returning from active duty, Mr. Woods went to work for Lumberton State Bank (now Regions) in Lumberton, MS, where he worked for 25 years. He held many positions while at the bank including Cashier and Vice President until his retirement in 1978.

Mr. Woods was a member of the Retired Officers Association and the Marine Corps Retired Officers Association. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church where he served as an Usher, Head Usher and on the Official Board. Other memberships include, United Way of Lamar County, President of Lumberton Rotary Club, USM Foundation's Board, USM President's Circle, the USM Circle of Champions, Hattiesburg Civic Light Opera Board and American Heart Association. He was a philanthropist and loved giving to USM.

Roddy will be remembered as someone who loved God, family and his many friends. Roddy was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Laddie Woods, a brother Clarence W. Woods and his beloved Aunt Velma McElveen, all of Hattiesburg.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ann Hobart Smith Woods of Hattiesburg, MS; two sons, Doug (Lisa) Woods of Collierville, TN, Sam Woods (Stephanie Welborn) of Hattiesburg; two daughters, Julia (Travis) Dickinson and Tarra (Doug) Clark, all of Baton Rouge, LA; and eleven grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations made to the and Main Street United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be held Monday, October 1, 2012 at 9:30 A.M. until service time at 11:30 A.M. at Main Street United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery.
