Cynthia Sue Liles Gentry

Corpus Christi, TX

Cynthia Sue Liles Gentry, 80, of Corpus Christi, Texas died at home on Monday, September 5, 2011, after a short battle with leukemia. Sue was born in the family home in Hattiesburg, Mississippi on October 6, 1930 to Hiram Edward Liles and Amanda Norfleet Cox Liles.

While attending Mississippi Women's College, Cynthia Sue pursued a degree in music,her first love. After her junior year, the family moved to Houston, Texas in September, 1951. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Houston in August, 1952, at which time she became an elementary school teacher. On November 28, 1953 she married Timothy Peters Gentry after he received his wings.

After Tim retired from the Navy in Corpus Christi, the two of them earned Master of Science degrees with reading certification. Tim taught elementary school until his death in 1985, and in 1989 Sue became principal of First Baptist School which was the highlight of her career because she was allowed to merge her faith in God with her commitment to education. After she retired, she taught piano lessons until her death.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Tim, and her brother DeWitt.

She is survived by her brothers, Stephen P. Liles (Betty) and Laurence L. Liles (Shellie), her children, Sandra Case (Ken), Timothy E. Gentry (Tammie), Stephen B. Gentry and Karen Howry (Mike) and six grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church Chapel , 3115 Ocean Dr. Corpus Christi, Texas on Saturday, September 10, 2011, at 11 a.m. Burial will be private.
