John Thomas Russell

Tylertown, MS

John Thomas Russell (77) passed away in Round Rock, Texas on Friday, May 3, 2013. Services for Mr. Russell will be held Friday, May 10, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Hartman-Hughes Funeral Home in Tylertown, Mississippi.

John was born in Lawrence County, Mississippi to the late Thomas Paul and Delma Whittington Russell. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Henry and Grady Russell. John is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Miriam Vandiver Russell; son John Kenneth (Debbie Witte) Russell; daughters Barbara R. (Steve) Livingston and Jane R. (Randy) Jurgensmeyer; grandchildren: Shea and Camille Livingston, Jacob and Sarah Russell, Alexandra Witte, and Hannah and Claire Jurgensmeyer; and sister-in-law Ann Russell.

John graduated in 1954 from Monticello High School. He arrived at the University of Southern Mississippi in the Fall of 1954. He lettered four years in football at USM, culminating in the team being named the 1958 Small College Division National Football Champions. He graduated in 1959 from USM with a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Education degree. Upon graduation, he embarked upon a career in coaching and education, beginning in 1959 at Crystal Springs High School and then one year later at Pearl River Community College in Poplarville, Mississippi. He remained at PRCC until 1974 after reaching the position of Head Football Coach and Athletic Director. In 1974 he launched a career as a home builder in Austin, Texas until his retirement in 2002. He was a member of Leander United Methodist Church, Leander, Texas
