John William Allan Murphy passed away on July 13, 2013 at the age of 80. He was a longtime native of Hattiesburg. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, July 29, 2013 at Roseland Park Cemetery.
He served his country in the Korean War and was very involved in politics. He campaigned hard for the candidates of his choice, even running for senator himself. Mr. Murphy was a larger than life character in both radio and television in the 60's and 70's. He was known by his fans as "Honest" John. He did many live radio and TV remotes for Hattiesburg businesses, was a TV and Radio correspondent for the Hattiesburg Wrestling scene, and was a popular DJ for WFOR and WBKH.
He was very involved in his community. He was founder of the Hattiesburg Animal Humane Society and had many fundraisers for organizations in Hattiesburg. He also owned and operated three dry cleaners in Hattiesburg and was very charitable when it came to Camp Shelby's needs. During the last 30 years he ran his own business spanning over 4 states and was known as the "Road Runner".
Mr. Murphy was only married one time to June Murphy for 25 years. June Murphy preceded him in 1996. They were very involved in the Saenger Theatre, then called the Little Theatre, where together they did many plays.
Together, John and June had four children, Cynthia Hills, Randilyn Pace, Stevie Bagget and Scott Murphy; and six grandsons, Philip Davis, Zachery Hurst, Daniel Hills, Drew Pace, John Murphy Pace, and Roman Bagget, all of whom survived Mr. Murphy.
John Murphy was dearly loved by his family, friends and customers and he will be truly missed.
